Camping in the Okavango Delta

Sunway Botswana Okavango campsite small 1Maxwell returned from a Botswana Wild Parks BTa14 recently and had a wonderful time in the Okavango Delta. This is what he had to say in his own words.

Camping is an amazing experience, but not for the faint hearted. It brings you closer to untamed Africa. The nights are sometimes trying when you feel unsure if you going to see the sun in the morning or you start thinking you will become a statistic of the most unfortunate.

This year there were no good rains and many hippos and elephants are flocking into the delta where water is more available all the time. For hippos many pools have dried up and they need to move to better pools and that means knocking on some ones door. This obviously brings conflicts. The loud noises of challenging hippos are unmistakable and everywhere. Elephants are good at giving personal space so during the day they avoid camps. But occasionally they pass through like 30m away. When this happens late afternoon then know for sure you have visitors at night.

This is what exactly happened this particular night we could not believe if these elephants were going to leave us alive as they were basically everywhere around our camp. Me as a guide l have had these experiences before and had to advice clients to keep silent no matter how loud and close they can be. I had to assure my clients that we were going to survive. In the morning everyone was still alive but terrified. No one wanted to think we still had one last night of camping in the Delta. But to everyone’s relief the second night was not as bad. We only had one huge bull elephant continuously shaking the lala plum tree for the nuts. The sound from the shaking was so loud that you could think there were a thousand elephants rushing towards our camp for a stampede. As the fruits were falling to the ground they sound like few of the elephants knocked to the ground before they reach their target in a stampede. I know it’s difficult to make any one feel this feeling we experienced, but I have an idea, come and see Africa your self.
I love Africa and those who have been here with Sunway Safaris were totally impressed. Those who have not come l don’t know what you are waiting for. Hope to see you soon in Southern Africa.
