Jonathan enthrals us with this exciting part of the itinerary featured on the MOa14 Mozambique & Kruger Beach & Bush tour.
We started at 6am in the morning as this is the best time to view animals. We were guided by a local guide from the park who specialises in rhino tracking safaris.
Before we started our walk, our guide gave us a safety briefing of how to behave on a walking safari. On our walk we learnt about the surrounding environment and eco system, always aware that we were walking in an area with dangerous game. There was a wave of excitement when we came across a rhino midden and spoor because it meant there could be rhino in the area. Our guide was keeping a beady eye out for any movement while he explained and chatted to us about the rhinos territories and behaviour. Soon after coming across the spoor and dung, we spotted two rhino’s not far from us in thick bush! We walked parallel with the rhinos for a while until our paths nearly crossed. We were a mere 15 meters away from each other when the rhino’s noticed our presence and made off in the opposite direction.
This was a really exciting experience, our adrenaline was sky high. None of us had ever been so close to a rhino. We could smell them, hear them and understand what a formidable animal it is! We felt safe as the guide knows the rhino’s in the reserve personally.
